COVERING KATY: Katy area residents donate 12 months of cleaning supplies to Fort Bend Shelter

KATY (Covering Katy) – Katy area residents donated 12 months worth of cleaning supplies during a drive to help the Fort Bend County Animal Services, which operates the county’s animal shelter.

Covering Katy, Patsy’s Pet Market and Kroger sponsored the drive. It was held at five Katy area Kroger stores on Saturday, Feb. 20. As people walked into participating stores, the needed items were on display. Customers could purchase the items and then drop them off to volunteers prior to leaving the store.

“The response from our customers proved how powerful it is when communities and businesses come together for a cause. We thank Patsy’s Pet Market and Covering Katy for their partnership to help Fort Bend County Animal Services and Saving Our Companion Animals. As a longtime grocer in Katy, we appreciate our customers for their generosity and outpouring of donations,” said Kristal Howard of the Kroger Company.

By the end of the day Kroger customers had donated 243 containers of Dawn brand dish soap, 312 containers of bleach wipes, 122 containers of bleach, and 839 rolls of paper towels. Monetary donations were not actively solicited, but there was a cash box at each location, and an additional $1,100 was collected.

“I’m super pleased. I don’t think we could have done any better,” said Barbara Vass of Fort Bend County Animal Services. “We were overwhelmed by the generosity of the community. They always step up when we need them,” Vass added.

The drive was so successful that volunteers needed three trucks to transport the supplies back to the shelter once the drive was completed.

“We had a van and two trucks filled with supplies. The van was filled up to the roof, said Rene Vasquez, the director of Fort Bend County Animal Services. Vasquez and Vass were also pleased because there were two dogs that were adopted by Kroger customers during the drive.

In addition to what was collected at the five Kroger stores, Patsy’s Pet Market in Katy had been collecting the same items for several weeks leading up to the drive on February 20.

Patsy and Alex McCray, owners of Patsy’s Pet Market expressed their excitement hearing the totals. “Its hard to imagine that a small effort we started in our store just a couple of months ago became a major event hosted by Kroger. Our customers opened up their hearts and brought to our store 879 paper towels, and 109 disinfection wipes and 105 dishwashing soap containers. These donations along with what the greater Katy community residents donated at Kroger are truly a miracle. We are so very thankful to all that helped create a means to keep Fort Bend County Animal Services running a clean and healthy operation. We ask the Katy community to go check out Fort Bend Animal Services when considering adopting a pet, said Alex Mc Ray.

“Kroger and Covering Katy had conversations about how to work together to help the community; we just needed to find the right project. After seeing the supply drive at Patsy’s Pet Market, Covering Katy inquired if Kroger would like to help on a larger scale, and they jumped in with full support. Kroger managers, the folks from Patsy’s Pet Market and 30 volunteers from Saving Our Companion Animals worked together to make this effort a success. Covering Katy simply needed to promote it. Everyone else did the heavy lifting,” said Dennis Spellman, owner of Covering Katy. “What a wonderful group of people,” he added.

Over the next 12 months, the Fort Bend shelter will not have to purchase cleaning supplies for its animals’ cages. That means the shelter will have additional funds to care for its animals, courtesy of those who donated to this drive.
