Importance of Spaying & Neutering

Spaying and neutering are one of those small decisions that will make a huge difference. It helps prevent “oopsie puppies” – mostly it keeps shelters from overflowing with pets that need homes. Every shelter across the US is over stretched to capacity.

Shelters were started to keep stray pets off the streets and to prioritize disease control and vaccinations. Unfortunately, pets are reproducing at such a large rate we now have a huge pet homelessness problem. Some groups are dedicated only to feeding street dogs and cats because the problem is so bad in many cities. These animals have no home and there are not enough resources to manage this situation that everyone can agree with.

Neutered dogs and cats are less likely to roam while following hormone-driven impulses, mark every surface like a museum exhibit, or start drama with the neighbor’s dog. Plus, the heat cycle can be stressful and is not a pleasant process. Fixed pets are often healthier, with lower risks of certain cancers and infections.

I always say if you want to breed your dog or cat please ask to walk through a shelter with me. I will happily treat you to lunch and then help you fill out the adoption paperwork after you fall in love.

Bottom line: spaying and neutering helps pets live longer, healthier, more relaxed lives. Yes please!
